One of the Code of Ethics taught to students in my karate school for over 40 years is “I will give so much time to the improvement of myself that I have no time to criticize others”. Students from age 5 and older are asked to learn this code of ethic and to explain and give examples of how this code of ethic can be practiced in daily life. It is easy to criticize, and point out another person’s shortcomings, but being aware of a single shortcoming within yourself that you can correct is far better than being aware of a thousand in someone else.
If you feel compelled to point out something in others, let that something be something positive. When you see something beautiful in someone, don’t hesitate to tell them. It may take a second to say, but for them it could last a lifetime. People never forget how you made them feel. Remember, if you have to choose between being right and being kind, choose being kind and you will always be right.
